about how NRT Works
Smoking gives you a steady supply of nicotine. Quitting "cold turkey" shuts it off. Most quitting attempts fail because your body and your brain still crave nicotine.
NicoDerm CQ® lets you replace the nicotine you crave with a sophisticated delivery system - a patch - that gives you a steady flow of nicotine for up to 24 hours at a time.
The NicoDerm CQ® patch is different from any other patch. It’s unique design took years to test and perfect. It is the only over-the-counter nicotine patch that you can use over a 10 week period with 3 strengths, or steps so that you may gradually, smoothly reduce the level of nicotine in your body. It can be worn for either 16 or 24 hours.
NicoDerm CQ® helps you to wean yourself from nicotine, gradually decreasing the dosage until it's low enough for you to discontinue using it altogether. By the end of a 10 week period, you can be nicotine free! But remember, your chances of quitting can improve when you use NicoDerm CQ® with a counselling program.
Successful quitters report that the excitement, the elation of your transformation as you become a nonsmoker is much more pleasurable than the habit ever was.
We’re not saying its easy. But we want you to know that it can feel a lot better than you might think.
Now we’re going to tell you how to do it.
Which step is right for you
Nicoderm CQ® comes in three strengths, or steps.
If you smoke more than 10 cigarettes a day, begin with step 1 (21mg.). After 6 weeks move to step 2 (14mg) for two weeks, then move to step 3 (7mg.) for 2 weeks. If you still feel the need to use Nicoderm CQ® after week 10, talk with your doctor or health professional.
If you smoke 10 cigarettes or less a day, begin with step 2 (14mg) for six weeks. After 6 weeks, move to step 3 (7mg.) for two weeks. If you still feel the need to use Nicoderm CQ® after week 8, talk with your doctor or health professional.
In short - heavy smokers take 3 steps, light smokers take 2.
How to use NicoDerm CQ®
OK, you’re ready to start wearing the NicoDerm CQ® patch.
You’ve read the booklet that comes with the NicoDerm CQ® patch. You’ve read the box.
You’ve determined which strength is right for you.
And you are committed to our 10 week process.
(or an 8 week process if you are a light smoker.)
You’re psyched.
Remember, no cigarettes.
Set a time. First thing in the morning is good. Doing it at the same time every day helps you remember.
Choose a clean, dry, non-hairy area of skin. Upper arm is good for most people.
Open the sealed foil pouch.
Take out the NicoDerm CQ® patch. The sticky side is covered with a clear plastic liner.
Pull the liner off, one side at a time. Try not to touch the silver part.
Press the NicoDerm CQ® patch firmly on your skin with the heel of your hand for at least 10 seconds.
Wash your hands after applying or removing Nicoderm CQ® . Throw the foil pouch away. Place the plastic liner in the slot in the disposal tray provided in the NicoDerm CQ® package where it will be out of reach of children and pets. (Every NicoDerm CQ® box comes with a handy disposal feature.)
That’s it in a nutshell.
Still, remember to read everything in the booklet.
You’ll be wearing your NicoDerm CQ® patch for either 16 or 24 hours.
If you crave cigarettes when you wake up, wear the patch for 24 hours, otherwise take it off at bedtime.
